Alanta Cup Volunteer Opportunity

Since the Atlanta Cup is not sponsered by any individual club but is a program run by the state soccer association, participating teams must participate in the volunteer duties that are typically distrubuted within a "host" club. You have an opportunity to "pick" your volunteer assignment and get it out of the way before the weekend. The Atlatna Cup is currently looking for volunteers to work the Friday night registration. Since the assignment is 4 hours long I am asking for two vounteers to "split" this into halves. Please respond by e-mail to doug.jory@amec.com and let me know which half you would like to take. As usual, first response gets to pick their assignment. If we receive no volunteers then I will draw names at random and you may not get what you want. See details inserted below:

Coach would like the players on the field and ready to play 45 minutes before every game.

Doug wanted me to tell you we are the Home team at 11 am--so wear All White and are the Away team at 3:30 pm wearing All Red.

We also play Sunday morning at 11 am as the Away Team, so wear All Red again, but bring both jerseys just in case to ALL games.

We might have to repeat Saturday's idea of staying at the Park because the semi-finals are at 3:00 pm Sunday at Wade Walker.

Finals are 8:30 am at McCurry Park North on Monday.

The weather is to be in the 80's and sunny---Perfect !

We have games at Wade Walker Park on Saturday at 11:00 am and 3:30 pm. At practice tonight, Coach Stephen said he would like us to spend the time between games as a team, if possible.

Since the time is so short between games, some of us were thinking of bringing lunch for our own individual families and just hanging out at the park. There are shelters throughout Wade Walker Park.

There is a McDonald's by the Park, and a Subway on Stone Mountain-Lithonia Road. (Turn rt. out of the park and rt. on St. Mtn-Lithonia Road. Address is 2038). There are other places, but farther away.

Apple and Orange slices will be available at helf-time of all games.

If anyone has a canopy to provide the girls shade during the games, please bring it!

Practice Uniform

The Practice Uniform survey has closed and the overwhelming majority of respondents voted for the Ultimate Package. The vote for practice shirt colors was a close one but in the end the Red/Grey combination carried the day. Attached to this e-mail is an order form for the practice shirts & warm-ups. As has been mentioned before, the purchase of practice uniform pieces beyond the two practice shirts is totally voluntary. However, based on the survey response the overwhelming majority of the players were in favor of the Ultimate package so we encourage everyone to move up to this option so that the girls can have matching warmups and long sleeve tees.

If we can get our order to the printer by next Monday there is a good chance that we can pick up the shirts and warm-ups prior to our 1st tournament. I will send a sample of the hoodie with Sarah to practice tonight if you are interested in having your daughter try one on to get a "feel" for size to be ordered. I will also be around towards the end of practice to pick up order forms and answer any questions that you may have about practice outfit.

Please register your preference for practice shirt/warm-up package option as well as practice shirt color preference on the survey that has been opened up on the team website. Please note that in order for printer to hold the prices on the upgraded packages we will need for the majority of the players to purchase these items. I would hope that "as a team" we can all order the same pieces so that we will look like a team every time we take the field. I have spoken with many of the parents during last Thursday's practice and the genreal consensus was running in favor of purchasing the Ultimate package.

Good Morning Everyone!

I wanted to remind you that training fees for August($85) are now due. If you have not paid, please do so TONIGHT. Fees are due to be paid to GSA and we don't want to be late. :)

Also, remember to turn in a signed copy of the disclosure form as well as a notorized copy of the GSA medical release form, if you have not yet done that.

Practice tonight will be at Wade Walker Park from 6:30 PM until 8:00 PM. If you are unable to attend, please let Stephen, Doug or me know if you haven't already. All players are expected to be ON THE FIELD, READY TO PRACTICE AT 6:30. So, you may want to arrive a few minutes early to park, get to the field and get on cleats etc. I heard Coach Stephen mention LATE & 5 LAPS the other night so be warned. :)

Practice Next Week

Next week we will have practice on Tuesday and Thursday from 6:30 to 8:00 pm at Wade Walker park (GSA fields are reserved for Boys Select Camp). We will have a brief parent meeting at the start of Tuesday's practice. Please plan to attend as Stephen would like to address the upcoming season, discuss Atlanta Cup Tournament, etc.

Cindy Wiley has offered to take pictures of players for player passes. If your player hasn't already gotten their picture taken please be at the GSA complex by 7:45 am tomorrow morning and Cindy will get one then. She will also be taking pictures at next Tuesday's practice if you aren't in town this week.

Also, if you haven't yet turned in your financial disclosure form or notorized medical release please bring them with you to next Tuesday's meeting. You may also turn in your check for August training fees as well

Training Fees for 2010-2011

Hello everyone!

I will be taking over the treasurer duties for the 97 Phoenix this year. Everyone should have received a copy of the disclosure Doug sent in a previous e-mail. If you have not, you may login to our website for past e-mails. Please update any information in the directory if needed, including updating e-mail addresses where you would like team information to be sent. You can list multiple addresses.

As Doug mentioned, everyone needs to turn in a signed disclosure form. This breaks down our expenses for the year and is a committment for both the fall and spring seasons. I will be collecting fees on the 1st of the month so that we can get funds deposited and paid to GSA in a timely manner. We have had some months where we were late as not everyone had paid on time. :( This does not make GSA happy and reflects poorly on our team so... PLEASE BE SURE FEES ARE PAID ON TIME!!!

I will be collecting AUGUST training fees THIS WEEK. The first falls on Sunday and I know some will not get paid until Friday so if you need to give me a check at Tuesday's practice, August 3, that is fine, but please NO LATER. Please make checks payable to GSA 97 Phoenix Black.

I will also plan on taking pictures of all the girls this week so we can get our player cards done.

In addition to collecting fees, you may also give me the signed disclosure forms and the notorized medical release forms and I will get them to Doug or Sarah.

Team Camp is next week - 8:00 to 11:00 am. Please make sure that your player is well hydrated before and after practice. Training uniform for first day will be black shorts and a light colored GSA training tee shirt (or other white soccer tee shirt). Players should be at the GSA complex on time ready to start practice with shin guards, cleats, ball, etc.

Uniform Order Submittals

Roberta Stevens has agreed to coordinate uniform orders for the upcoming season. We must submit one consolidated order for the team and Roberta has graciously agreed to do this. In order to meet the deadline set by Eurosport for order submittals Roberta asks that you have your individual orders and check for same to her by this Friday July 2, 2010. Roberta may be reached on her mobile at 770-329-5073. If you wish to mail or deliver your order and payment to her house the address is: 201 Streamside Court, Lilburn, GA 30047 (If you send your order in by mail please do so early enough to ensure delivery by this Friday).

It has also been brought to my attention that the order form sent with a prior e-mail does not provide a place for you to record your order for "white" uniform pieces. Please change the description in the order form for "black" uniform pieces to instead describe the color as "white". If you also wish to order a pair of the "black" shorts for practice please indicate so in the area of the order form that currently is designated for order of "green keeper" uniform pieces.

2010/2011 Season Uniform Orders

I received notice today that we must have our team uniform orders submitted by July 7, 2010. For players returning to GSA the good news is that we will be using the same uniforms as last year so you only need to place an order if your player has "outgrown" their current uniforms or you desire additional replacement/extra uniform pieces.

Attached to this e-mail is the excel format uniform order guide that outlines what is available as well as pricing. New players will at a minimum need to order red and white shirt/sock/short combination. The black practice shorts aren't mandatory but are a suggested purchase. I will send out a separate e-mail regarding practice tee shirts as we get closer to start of season.

Registration for 2010/2011 Season

Signing day is this coming Tuesday (6/22/2010). I will send out an e-mail on signing day with your players registration number so that you can go online and register your player.

Attached to this e-mail is a "draft" copy of the financial disclosure form for the 2010/2011 season. You will need to return a signed copy of the disclosure form with other paperwork required for registration process. I have listed the "tentative" tournament schedule in this document.

Returning and new players will need to also provide a "notarized" copy of the GSA medical waivier as well as a wallet size picture for the player pass. New players will also need to provide a legible copy of the players birth certificate.

Please join Stephen and I in welcoming the four new players to the team:

Please make sure and introduce yourselves to our new players and their parents during the teams summer activities. (If one of the parents is a notary please let me know if you are willing to bring your stamp to this get together to notarize the release form) I will send out a follow-up e-mail with details related to this get together sometime next week.

Stephen is developing plans for weeknight fitness and skills training during July. In the meantime, please remind your player that they need to continue running, juggling, etc. as GSA Select Team summer camp will be here before you know it - July 26-30, 2010.

GSA Athena U14 Open Tryouts - June 8/9/10

GSA will be holding tryouts for the 2010/2011 Season for the rising U14 players June 8/9/10 on Spencer field from 6:30 to 8:00. The timeframe for open tryouts, recruiting and team formation are set by the state soccer association. It is important that all players from the current U13 Black team attend tryouts. If for some reason you cannot attend please let Stephen or Doug know. Please make sure that your players continue to train and work on conditioning as it will likely be very hot during the tryouts. On the days of the tryouts make sure that your player gets lots of rest and is well hydrated.

The GSA 97 Black Soccer Team Party will be THIS Tuesday, May 25, at 6:30 p.m., at Enzo's Pizza in Tucker. Please come in and sit down in the reserved area. When all of the girls arrive, we will have them go to the counter together to order. The team will pay for their meals. Parents will pay for their meals and those of any siblings attending.

Volunteer Assignments for this Weekend

Thanks to the Brownes and Blys for stepping up and volunteering for Field Marshall duties. The rest of the slots I had to fill in random order. Assignments are as follows:

If you can't make your assigned time slot you are responsible for finding someone to take your place. If you have never been a field marshall at GSA don't worry becuase responsibilities are rather simple. 1) You need to walk around the fields and be alert for any issues that require the attention of the GSA officer of the day. 2) Help make sure that fields are kept free of trash (Make sure and remind players and parents to pick-up any trash in their areas when games are finished) 3) Be a good representative of the club. Please make sure and wear one of the orange vests that will be available in front of the clubhouse while performing the field marshal duties.

We have been assigned six volunteer roles for this weekend as follows:

Saturday - Field Marshal (Griffith/Holman/Weiland): Need 4 volunteers for 1-1/2 hour shift starting at 1:30, 3:00, 4:30 & 6:00.

Sunday - Field Marshall (Bender/Upper 10) Need 2 volunteers for 1-1/2 hour shift starting at 1:30 & 3:00

The team manager from NASA let me know a little while ago that they are unable to play this weekend. Therefore I need to ask of each player if they are available on either Friday evening (5/14) or Saturday (5/15). The manager for the NASA team has advised that they won't be able to make it on the 9th so we are now looking at the evening of Friday May 7, 2010. I don't have a game time yet, but once we confirm folks general availability I should be able to secure a specific commitment and time slot for our game. Reminder - practice tonight at GSA from 6:30 to 8:00 PM. Please make sure that your player is on the fields ready for practice at 6:30 sharp as we have two (2) games this weekend and will need everyone prepared to play hard.

Saturday we are playing against WGFC back out at their Boundary Waters facility where we started the season. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:00 PM so please have your player in uniform (all Red) at the fields ready for warmups by 2:15. Please make sure and allow for travel time as traffic can be very unpredictable in this area around this time of the year.

Sunday we have a 4:30 home game against the South Georgia team. Please be at the fields by 3:45 in uniform (all White) ready for warmups.

Finally, please mark your calendars to reflect that we will be making up last Saturday's game against NASA on Sunday May 9, 2010 at 3:00 PM. We conducted a survey earlier this season looking at this date as a possible make-up date for another game and were made aware that two players had potential conflicts with this date. Please let me know ASAP if you have a conflict with this date (e-mail me at doug.jory@amec.com).

Attached is the latest statement of account for our team funds. As you will see, we currently have $215.26 in our account. Looking ahead, I will be collecting $780 for May training fees, and $384 for tournament fees. That would bring us to a total of $ 1,379.26. Minus the $900 we owe for May training fees, that leaves us with $479.26 at the end of the season. We may have a website fee to pay of around $85. Bottom line, we have about $400 to work with. Do we want to start thinking/talking about coach gifts, end of season team party, etc?

Treatment with "RICE":

If your child or student becomes injured while playing a sport, remember R. I. C. E.:

Rest - reduce or eliminate using the injured body part for 48 hours. With leg injuries, stay off them completely.
Ice - Place ice on the injured area for 20 minutes sessions. Repeat 4 - 8 times per day. Use bagged ice, a cold pack, or a zip lock bag with crushed ice wrapped in a towel.
Compression - Compress an injured ankle, knee or wrist. Ask your doctor to recommend whether you should use elastic wraps, air casts or splints, special boots or bandages.
Elevation - Use a pillow to elevate the injured area above the heart level.

Since the forecast does not call for any additional precipitation until later in the week we are looking to see if it will be possible to make-up todays's practice on Tuesday or Wednesday. Please let me know of any conflicts that you have that would prevent your daughter from attending a make-up practice on those days at the usual time (6:30-8:00). Next Week Practice

It's Friday night and it looks like the rain is about ready to stop. The next band of rain is not forecast to come into town until next Tuesday so we are keeping our fingers crossed and going to try and get in a practice session next Monday (2/8/2010) from 6:30 to 8:00 at the SMYSA Wade Walker facility. We will also try to get in a practice on Thursday (if the weather cooperates). We will wait till closer to Thursday to make a decision on practice location for Thursday. We would like to get back to the GSA fields, but given the recent rains it is likely to be some time until they are open. In the meantime we are looking at several local indoor facilities but everyone is booked for next week. We will continue to look at all of our options for practice space and try to give folks as much notice as is possible before making any changes but please check your e-mail and the team website before heading out to practice to make sure that nothing has changed.

Due to to recent rains, the GSA complex is closed and Stephen has decided to cancel today's practice session. Please remind your player that they should still spend some time this afternoon to work on conditioning (running, sprints, etc.) and ball skills.

We are still trying to finalize tournament details. Due to several players being out over the weekend of 2/21 and the timing involved with finding "guest" players, we missed the deadline for application to Concorde tournament. We continue to correspond with the tournament officials to determine if they have an opening at our age group/level of play. We are looking at alternative tournaments for the following weekend so please try and both dates open.

IMPORTANT - All U13 and U14 teams must have at least 7 players registered BEFORE January 15 so the team can be declared for the Spring season.

Registration is very easy if the following directions are followed. This is DIFFERENT from the Fall - all returning players have been registered and activated. All that is necessary is payment.

Please follow these simple steps:

Tomorrow's Game at WGFC

The WGFC Team Website shows the Chestnut Log complex as being open. Given the inclement weather forecast for overnight and early am please check your e-mail and the team website for updates before heading out. Right now it looks as if our game is on. Please be at the fields 45 minutes before gametime (12:45) for warmups. Since this is an away game we will wear our all red uniform. Underarmor and other cold weather clothing are recommended but must be worn inside the uniform.

Yesterday's rains have once again rendered the complex in an unsafe/unplayable condition so the association has closed the fields. Stephen was unable to obtain an alternate practice location so we regretably must cancel practice. We have one final game this Saturday so it is important that the girls do some running, juggling and ball skills drills on their own to stay sharp.

Parents,

Due to the conditions on the GSA field we will be practicing at Stone Mountain tomorrow and Thursday. We will have lights and is required to pay $30.

Please let the girls know how well they played today, I am extreamly pleased with their performance and I promis one day there will be no need for me to continiously yell fron the side lines.

I would also olke to validate comradery, when Kaite fell her teammates Cathrine and Kathring gave her first aid treatment of ice. It just does not get any better than this.

This Weekends Games

We have two games this weekend. Both are currently scheduled for the GSA complex. No announcement has been made as to whether or not GSA will be open this weekend. I have spoken with the manager of the team we are playing on Sunday (TYSA) and he is looking for a "backup" field at their complex for Sunday. We don't have any "backup" plans for Saturday so please keep an eye on the team and GSA websites as well as look for last minute e-mails regarding field status. Please wear all white for Saturday game and all red on Sunday. Additional details inserted below.

The state soccer association has extended the deadline for completion of regular season games. Accordingly, we have rescheduled the away game against WGFC for Saturday December 5, 2009. I will advise of game time as soon as the other team has been able to secure a field commitment from their club scheduler.

Stephen would like to have practice tonight at Wade Walker from 6:00 to 7:30. Please have your player on the field ready to start practice at 6:00 pm. Since we "fell back" an hour this weekend it will be getting dark an hour earlier and tonight's practice is contingent on getting the WW park personnel to turn on the field lights. Stephen won't know for sure if we will have lights until later this afternoon. This is an extended weekend for Gwinnett county schools and I have heard that some families may have plans that will keep their daughter from attending the game. I have heard from the majority of you and all has agreed to be at Wade Walker tomorrow at 6:30 pm, we will be at field #6 which is directly infront of the club house benches. Also, we are only using this facility until our fields reopen.

Practice Venue

Parents, I have been able to get a practice field at the Stone Mountain Youth Soccer Association venue at Wade Walker Park in Stone Mountain, 5585 Rockbridge Rd. Stone Mountain, GA. 30086. I would like to have practice there tomorrow at 6:30 pm. as we all know by now our home fields are in bad shape at the monent and it may be a couple weeks before we can return to normal, I need a mandatory response from each parent letting me know if they can make it, I would also like to discuss future practices at this site. We have our first game on Saturday (9/12) at GSA-Schrader field. The scheduled start time is 2:30 pm. Please make sure that the girls get plenty of rest Friday night and are well hydrated. Please be at the fields at least 45 minutes before game time for warm-ups. Since we are the home team we will wear our all white uniform combination. Please make sure and bring your red jersey as a back-up.
